THE HISTORY OF

SPRINGS NAMES

Welcome in web of Marianske Lazne Com(mercial)...

Where did the springs get their names?

The most famous spring - KŘÍŽOVÝ (BY THE CROSS) – was originally named SLANÝ (SALTY) because of its salty taste. However, the same name referred to FERDINAND’S Spring. Damian Schultz of Teplá erected a big wooden cross nearby SLANÝ Spring in 1749. The name has changed and the spring has been known as KŘÍŽOVÝ since. Three springs are firstly mentioned in 1766 book by Zauschner - Křížový, Ambrož‘s a Mary’s.

AMBROŽ’S Spring carries the name of abbot Jeronym Ambrož, who fought to make these springs available to sufferers. It used to be and is still sometimes referred to as the “Spring of Love”. This spring was especially helpful to people with anaemia due to its high iron contents.

FERDINANDS Springs (there are six of them) - there was only one in early days – called SLANÝ (SALTY) and alternatively ÚŠOVICKÝ (name of suburb). In 1819 the spring was named KOLOVRATS and later KARL’S. The name was eventually changed to FERDINAND‘S after the king Ferdinand who drew attention to it in the document dated 1528.

KAROLINA’S Spring surfaces underneath the old „kolonáda“ below the church and was named NOVÝ (NEW) when discovered in 1809. Roofing was built in 1817 and the name changed in honour of Karolina Augusta, wife of the emperor František I.

RUDOLF’S Spring used to emerge in the fields of Úšovice. The owner of the land was reluctant to sell it regardless of a high bid offered by the Monastery. The Monastery eventually bought the neighbouring field and gained access to the spring water by boring. Number of smaller springs was adjoined to RUDOLF’S spring in 1902. The name is to honour prince Rudolf (1858 - 1889), who was meant to take up the throne after Franz Joseph I.

FORREST Spring has been known forever – it is recorded in the maps as SCHNEIDSÄUERLING as early as 1683. After the spa has been established the spring was renamed VĚTROVÝ (also AEOLSKÝ). Its current name goes back to 1827 - 1828 when landscaping works were carried out in its close vicinity.

Springs were discovered in the local parks in 1873. ALEXANDRA’S Spring is named after the spa’s famous guest Alexandra Mecklenburská, ALFRÉD’S Spring after the Teplá Monastery abbot Alfréd Clementso. PRELÁT’S Spring surfaces in Potta’s valley, is therefore sometimes referred to as Potta Spring. In 1902 was the spring thanks to dr. Helmer acquired by the Monastery and officially named PRELAT’S.

Springs discovered later in Potta’s valley have “modern” names - ALFA, BETA, GAMA, DELTA, only PUTZ’S and SCHIRMER’S are presumably named after their explorers.
